Farming Reimagined: From Backbreaking Labor to Smart AgricultureLivestock and Dairy Revolution: A New Economy from MilkAbout K-RAD

OSOGBO, NIGERIA – Gubernatorial aspirant Kunle Rasheed Adekunle, widely known as K-RAD, has unveiled a comprehensive policy blueprint aimed at transforming Osun State’s agricultural sector through industrialization and innovation. As part of his structured approach to governance, the seasoned technocrat and development advocate announced his Agricultural Breakthrough Plan—a bold strategy designed to boost productivity, ensure food sufficiency, and elevate rural prosperity.

Speaking on the premise of demographic pressure and food insecurity, K-RAD drew from historical economic theory, emphasizing the outdated model of calling more people back to the farms. “The real solution,” he noted, “is not population-driven farming, but industrialized agriculture powered by science, technology, and efficient land management.”

Farming Reimagined: From Backbreaking Labor to Smart Agriculture

K-RAD’s blueprint prioritizes mechanization as a game-changer. In a bid to support farmers from the ground up, his administration plans to provide land-clearing support—covering vegetation removal, uprooting tree roots, and extracting rocks from arable lands. “Land clearing is the most expensive phase of farming,” he explained. “We will take on that burden, so our farmers can focus on productivity.”

By Year One, at least 500 hectares will be cleared, plowed, and seeded in each of the 30 Local Government Areas. This figure is expected to triple by the second year, scaling up the farming capacity of Osun significantly.

With the average farm size in Osun at just 3 acres, K-RAD’s plan aims to expand it to 10 acres per full-time farmer—boosting productivity while reducing labor demands. “We’ll also quadruple yield per acre,” he added, “transforming a farmer’s output from 3 tons to over 100 tons annually.”

Key enablers of this agricultural revolution include:

  • Deployment of machines and modern equipment
  • Use of improved seeds and crop varieties
  • Engagement of trained agricultural extension officers
  • Strong partnerships with universities and research institutes
  • Strengthening of the Ministry of Agriculture’s coordinating role

Livestock and Dairy Revolution: A New Economy from Milk

K-RAD’s policy framework also addresses the state’s underdeveloped livestock sector, with a particular focus on dairy. Highlighting the alarming rise in the cost of milk powder—now N15 per gram compared to N2 five years ago—he warned of the long-term impact of protein deficiency on child development and national productivity.

To reverse this trend, K-RAD proposes a household-based dairy initiative. Under this plan, every household in Osun will be equipped to own at least two high-yield dairy cows, supported by a system of itinerant milk collectors who supply feed and buy milk daily on a credit model. The milk will be processed into powder and evaporated forms for market distribution.

The plan also features:

  • Introduction of superior dairy breeds
  • Use of advanced breeding technologies
  • Engagement of veterinary officers for animal health
  • Creation of a cooperative-driven support structure
  • Government as Buyer of Last Resort for crops

With an ambitious target of 2 million household dairy cattle producing 30 million liters of milk daily, the initiative could translate to an income of over N15,000 per household per day—boosting food supply, household wealth, and economic resilience across Osun State.

“This is more than policy,” K-RAD affirmed. “It is a promise grounded in science, strategy, and the collective will of our people to rise beyond hunger and poverty.”
